Baytown Sun Index History
The index originated as the personal project of I. M. "Deacon" Jones. These hand-written entries were donated to Sterling Municipal Library in the late 1960's, which continued the indexing to the present. The Erma Wood Carlson Learning Resources Center of Lee College contributed indexing during the 1970's and early 1980's. The Baytown Genealogical Society contributed obituaries from 1996-2001. Sterling Municipal Library continues the obituary index from 2001-present as a part of its general index to the newspaper.
Also entered in the index are two microfilm rolls of special newspaper editions (1933-1964) which include: The Tri-Cities Sun, The News-Tribune, The Democrat, The Houston Post, The Houston Chronicle, The Daily Sun, The Baytown Sun, The LaPorte Liberal, The Liberty Vindicator, The LaPorte Bayshore Sun.
This index has been made possible, in part, through a TexTreasures grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. George Eggleston of the Houston Area Library Automated Network and Houston Public Library is gratefully acknowledged for creation of this database.
