Ways To Search:

For a broader search, use a singular noun, rather than plural

  • Example: mayor will produce "mayor, mayoral, mayors"
    mayors will produce only "mayors"

When searching by name, do not use any punctuation.

  • Example: Eddie Cleveland or Cleveland Eddie will produce an exact match
E Cleveland or Cleveland E will yield all variations of the first name; e.g. Ed, E. D., Edward, etc.

Cleveland will produce all entries containing that word

To limit by date, insert a keyword and choose a date option. You may insert a range of dates by completing the boxes with mm/dd/yyyy.

  • Example: Keyword: City Council
    Range of Dates: 01/01/1949 - 12/31/1953

For all articles on a given date or range of dates, omit keyword and enter dates in the date box.

  • Example: Range of Dates: 07/07/2000 - 07/07/2001

This index has been made possible, in part, through a TexTreasures grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Texas State Library and Archives Commission.  George Eggleston of the Houston Area Library Automated Network and Houston Public Library is gratefully acknowledged for creation of this database.
